Most of you will be aware that the Arctic sea ice was at minimum in September and Antarctica was at maximum in the same month, this means Arctic will be gaining ice and Antarctica will be losing.
Arctic sea ice concentration for the 15/10/2020 was 5.36 Mill Km2.
This in fact was the lowest concentration on record for the date (1979).
The reason for this was a huge ridge of high pressure and warm surface temperatures as seen in the map below.
I would point out at this time the cool temperatures in the US and NW Europe, again a result of cooler air rushing out of the Arctic.
Antarctica
Antarctica sea ice concentration for 15/10/2020 was 18.54 Mill Km2.
We discussed the areas of gain/loss yesterday.
Greenland
SMBacc for Greenland was 95.5Gts and the SMB Daily additions were 0.692Gts.
A slow day however, nothing to be alarmed about at this early stage, Greenland sea ice (east of Greenland) is currently at a 5 year high.
It is only correct that I mention other areas are at 5 year lows.
The Siberian sea is very slow to kick off, again look at the high pressure ridging.
That concludes today's update.
Thanks
David.
